WordPress: Sharing Icons

Our WordPress themes come with all of the main social media sharing icons. This allows your readers to quickly share your content with their followers on social media sites.

You can select which icons you would like to display in the Customizer options. You can also remove all sharing icons if you would prefer to use a third party sharing plugins (such as Jetpack Share).

How to enable/disable the post sharing icons

1. Go to the Customizer screen at Appearance > Customizer

2. Select the “Sharing Icons” tab from the options on the left:

You can now select the icons you would like to be shown on posts (if any). You can also change the “Share:” title text too.

Is there a share icon you think is missing? Let us know in the comments below and we will see if this can be added to a future update for you 🙂

Hi Phil! I have a question! I just tried sharing one of my own blog posts with the FACEBOOK sharing icon and while I can see text, there is no image and if there is an image then it’s the banner of my website, not a photo from the actual post.

Where is the facebook sharing icon pulling the image from? I checked and the post itself has of course photos and a thumbnail image. I’ve tried several of my posts now and not a single one shows a photo when I share one of my posts on Facebook. I hope this makes sense.

These are examples of posts showing no photo and so far I haven’t found one that does show one:

Hi Nina, it looks like the image is too big to share on Facebook, so they are blocking it. If you try using this image instead it should work better. You can read more about how to upload the image to a blog post in this guide.

I’d recommend installing the Imsanity plugin on your site too. This will resize any very large images to make sure they work well on your site.

Hi Phil, Thank you so much for your swift response! I played around with it a little and also used YOAST to set images and I am still experiencing issues. When clicking on the facebook share button I don’t have a photo for most posts that I updated.

These are good examples of posts that have a resized thumbnail (1200 x 800 or 945 x 630) and yet it still doesn’t work:

Any advise why this isn’t working on my end? Thank you so much!

I just tried testing those links in the debugger and it is showing a “The following required properties are missing: fb:app_id” error. This can be fixed via this guide from Yoast.

I want a count display on the icons. Is that possible?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Nancy, this isn’t possible with the standard sharing icons, unfortunately. However you could use a plugin such as Social Warfare to add a share count. I’ve not used that plugin before, but I think it provides that feature.

    Hello!
I see my sharing icons at the end of my posts in the floated summary on the home page, but when you click and read the post those sharing icons disappear so there’s no way to share from the full post view.
The FOLLOW social icons are at the bottom of each post page, but they only lead to my social profiles.
Am I missing something or do I need to install a sharing plugin?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Tessa, the sharing icons are displayed under the “You may also like:” section, near the comments box. I’ve just viewed a post on your site and the icons were showing for me. You might like to use a plugin to display the sharing icons more prominently though. Most plugins will add the sharing icons before the “Follow” and author bio section.

      1. Tessa

Ok thanks Phil, wish there was a way of moving those sharing icons on posts above the author bio and follow section through the theme. I kinda hate using plugins unless I have to but thanks for the headsup.

        1. Phil (pipdig)

I’ll see if we can add it to the next update for you. In theory I think it should be ok to add an option to display the icons at the top/bottom of the footer area. Then everyone can make a decision based on their own site’s layout. Thanks for the feedback.

    Hi Phil!

My “Sharing Icons” feature isn’t working at all. It’s enabled, I have the social media boxes checked, but it’s not actually showing up. How can we fix this so that my content is shareable? Thank you!

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Key, the sharing icons seem to be working for me. What happens when you try to click the Twitter sharing icon for your latest post?

      1. Key

The thing is, I don’t even see an option to share a blog post to a social media site. I don’t have any “share” icons. I just have “follow” icons. Any icon featured on my site (no matter where it is) is going to take my readers directly to my social pages. I just don’t know why icons for “sharing” aren’t showing on my site for every blog post written; whether that’s the homepage or on each individual blog post page. There aren’t any sharing icons at the bottom of each post. Or, at least, I don’t see it on my end.

I also don’t see the feature for readers to comment if they would like. Something weird happened with Bluehost recently, and I had to sort of re-do my site layout. But i feel like I’ve gone through all of the customization pieces available. And I just realized that people can’t comment at the end of a blog post like they used to be able to. How can I enable that again?

      2. Key

Okay so today I realized something. When I pull my blog up on my phone (which I don’t do too often), I cans see where it says “Share This Post” under each blog post. But on my laptop (what I mainly use), I don’t see that feature displayed. Why is that?

          1. Key

Oh my gosh, that was it! It was an ad blocker. Thank you SO much! I got my comment situation sorted out as well. I appreciate your help, Phil!

  5. Rachael

My social media icons are showing on every post but the links themselves aren’t working. When the Twitter share icon is selected it just grabs the post title but doesn’t provide a link to share! And the Facebook one just says “Page not found”.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Rachael, I just tried sharing a post on Twitter which worked for me – https://imgur.com/a/7ZjzS. Is the same issue occurring on all of your posts for you? Or just specific ones?

        1. Phil (pipdig)

It looks like there are some strange characters on the end of tat post link. If you edit the permalink to remove the “%E2%80%A8” section does it fix the sharing icons? You can edit that by using the option under the post title in the post editor.

          1. Rachael

Ah yes I see what you mean. When I went to edit it though, those characters didn’t show up in the permalink in the back end but are still there in the front end :S

            1. Phil (pipdig)

That’s strange, is there anything within the title of that post which could cause it? For example extra space at the end of the title text. If you’re unable to remove it, you may need to recreate the post and copy the contents to there to replace it.

  6. vee

I seem to have a problem above the sharing Icons. It says follow: underneath my posts. Do you know how I can get rid of this?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Vee, that’s a coming from a setting you can find in the “Blog Post Options” section of the Customizer 🙂

  7. Lizzie Bee

Hey Phil, is it possible to show sharing icons on blogger templates at all please?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Lizzie, it is possible to add more sharing ions to Blogger. However the process is much more complex as it requires editing the HTML. Which sharing icons would you like to add?

  8. Hannah Meadows

I’d love a sharing widget that looks the same as the follow widget and can sit alongside it. Are there any plans to add this, please? In mobile view in particular, the sharing icons in the footer aren’t as prominent as I’d like.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Hannah, thanks for the suggestion! However I’m not sure if creating a widget would solve your problem. This is because the widgets move to the bottom of the screen on mobile, so ironically it might become even less accessible on phones.

Instead, you might want to try a sharing plugin such as shareaholic. This will provide some options for displaying sharing icons across your site. One thing to bear in mind is that plugins like this can slow your site down a little. So you may need to reduce the number of posts displayed via this option at the same time.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Ava, Reddit and Digg are actually available already. They should be in the list of options in the panel 🙂

      1. Ava James

Thanks! I thought so but cannot find it now – sorry learning my way around wordpress.

          1. Ava James

Thanks Phil, sorry maybe I didn’t explain this. I have added the buttons as you have indicated above, but under Social Links it does not allow me to add my user name for either digg or reddit so that it links direct. Maybe this is my oversight – as is this even possible?
            Thank you Ava

            1. Phil (pipdig)

Ah I see! Thanks for clarifying. The social links don’t currently include those options however I’ll add those to the next update for you 🙂

                1. Ava James

Can the sharing icons be added to all pages or is it only on the main posts from the home page? Thanks ava

                  1. Phil (pipdig)

The sharing icons will appear at the bottom of individual blog posts too. Usually below the “You may enjoy” section.

                    1. Ava James

Thanks, the blog posts work, but not on about me or any other page which isn’t a post.

  9. Petra

Hello, how can I change the position of the sharing social media icons? Currently they are like this:
    1. post
    2. follow icons
    3. shop the post
    4. you may also enjoy
    5. SHARE ICONS – I would like to move them straight after the post

    thank you
    Petra

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Petra, that’s not possible with the theme’s sharing icons unfortunately. You may wish to disable the sharing icons in the theme and use a plugin to position some new icons instead.
