WordPress: Featured Categories

This Customizer option allows you to select up to 4 post categories that will be featured at the top of your homepage. Each category displays the latest post from that topic automatically.

Please note:

  • You must select at least one category before this feature will work.
  • There must be at least 1 published post in a category for it to show in the options.

You can activate this feature from the “Featured Categories” tab in the Appearance > Customize section of your dashboard.

Pour les catรฉgories en vedette, est-il possible de mettre les titres sur les images plutรดt qu’en dessous?
    Merci d’avance!

For featured categories, is it possible to put titles on images rather than below?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Priscillia, that’s not possible at the moment. However we may be able to add it in a future update.

  2. Melissa

Hey I love the idea of featured categories however I don’t want my post title underneath the image, is there anyway I can change this or even make the post title text smaller?

  3. Sabine

Hi! Not quite related to the article but it pertains to featured categories, nonetheless. I uploaded a featured image for each main category of my blog. I did this from the Dashboard menu: Posts>Categories>Create or Edit categories. I was under the impression that it would display the image as a header on the category page itself. Apparently not. Can you please tell me what the purpose of uploading a featured image with each category is?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Sabine, this feature is not yet used in our themes. If you’d like to display an image within a category listing page, you may wish to use an image widget and set the visibility.

  4. Emily

    Hi there. Happy New Year!

I can’t seem to work this one out. My blog has just gone live, but try as I might I can’t get things to go onto their category page. If you go to the home page then click on ‘Life’ for instance (above the row of Instagram photos), all you’ll see is a ‘Nothing Found’ message. Would you mind having a quick look please. Thanks in advance :).

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Emily, this means that there are no published posts within the “life” category. You may wish to double check you have added any posts to this. You can check the number of posts in a category by viewing the column on the far right of the screen at ‘Posts > Categories’.

If you’re sure there is a post in the category, you could also try going to the ‘Settings > Permalinks’ page. Then click the “save” button without making any changes to the settings. This may clear out any issues for the category pages.

      1. Emily

Unfortunately neither of those things work. I’ve added this as the custom structure in the Settings > Permalinks.

  5. Laura

I currently have 4 categories posted on my blog,
How can I display only 2 or 3 for example?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Laura, if you select only 2 or 3 categories then this will be displayed. A category is only displayed if it has been selected in the options.

  6. Sherry

    Hi Phil,
The css code to hide/disable Featured Categories from appearing at the top on mobile device worked great! Is there a snippet to also hide/disable Featured Categories from appearing on Home Page when viewed on desktop? Currently the row of Featured Categories appears below Header Full Width Image (widget). Style & Light theme. Thank you.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

      Hi Sherry, glad it helped!

You should be able to hide this feature from the homepage by adding the CSS from this page.

  7. Anne van Lopik - Wilmink

    Hi Phil,

Is it possible to disable feautured categories on mobile devices? Currently, you need to scroll down a lot before entering the first blog post. Thanks!

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Anne, you can hide this feature on mobiles by copying the code from this page into the “Additional CSS” tab in the Customizer. This tab is near the bottom of the list on the left of the screen.

  8. Emma

Hi is there a way to link to a page displaying all of the categories from the featured Categories section on the home page, at the moment I can only click through to my most recent post in that category

      1. Emma

Thankyou, I tried that but it wasnt really what I was looking for. This person has three featured images: https://withinthesewallsblog.com/ Is it because I am using a different theme? I use Culture Shock whereas I think this is Holly and Weave?

        1. Phil (pipdig)

A I see, thanks for confirming. This is a feature of the Holly & Weave theme which you can view at https://hollyandweave.pipdig.co. It allows you to add up to 4 images at the top which link to any external url or page on your site.

  9. Candra Reeves

Is it possible to change the photos that showcase the featured categories instead of the latest posts in that category? I’m using Aruba Nights.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Candra, that’s not possible at the moment. However we may be able to add it to a future update if it is a popular feature. I’ve made a note of your request.

        1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Ellen, thanks for the feedback!

It looks like you’re using the Blossom theme, which includes a feature in the Customizer called “Featured Image Panels”. This allows you to upload an image and link to anywhere. So you could upload an image, then link it to your desired category. Let me know if that works for you.

  10. Alexa

    Hi Phil,
What is the best way to change a category’s name? I have equinox and would like to change 1 (ie. beauty to food), please advise ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Alexa, you can change the name of any category by going to the ‘Posts > Categories’ section of your dashboard ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Michaela Salacinski

Is it possible to have chosen blog posts featured for each category rather than the latest one?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Michaela, not directly. However you could workaround that by creating some new post categories specifically for this feature. For example, you could create a new category called “Travel”, then add your chosen post to this as well as your original “Travel” category. So the post would appear in the original category, but can also be assigned to this feature specifically too.

      Hopefully that makes sense!

      1. Michaela Salacinski

        Hi Phil

I thought so, just wondered if there was a different way, but done this now and it works great, thanks very much ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. Taylor

Hello my instagram header is not updating on my site with current pictures. How can I rectify this?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Taylor, it seems to be working for me when I view your site. Let me know if you still need any help with that.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Shana, that’s not possible at the moment but we might be able to add it in future. How many categories would you like to display?

        1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Claudia, apologies for the slow reply. We’ve created an extra section for this feature now. If you update the “pipdig Power Pack” you will be able to add 5 categories ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Lety Kachidza

how do I remove the date stamp from these featured posts?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Lety, I’ve just pushed update 2.14.3 for the pipdig Power Pack. After updating, you can disable post dates in the Customizer options ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Hilary, this feature is mainly designed to display at the top of the homepage. As an alternative, you may wish to use this shortcode in a page.

  14. frances

thanks! I updated and now I see the video widget. didn’t see it before ๐Ÿ˜‰

  15. frances

Thanks Phil, I’ll give it a try. What is the exact name of the widget you recommend. there are several.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

The “video” widget I sent a screenshot of comes with WordPress 4.8. I’d recommend updating to that by going to ‘Dashboard > Updates’ when you can ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. frances

HI there, is it possible to have a video auto play when the landing page is opened? Using Crystal and trying the featured categories customization. thanks

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Frances, I’d recommend using the new Video widget that comes with WordPress. You could try placing this widget in the “Header Full Width” widget section instead of the featured categories feature. You can set that up in the ‘Appearance > Widgets’ section of your dashboard.

      1. frances

HI Phil, I have successfully uploaded the video and it’s working fine…except it does not auto play. Any advice? Thanks

  17. taylor

I am trying to publish a post and display it under my categories. When I “customize” my site and save I can see the post, but it when i visit my site the post won’t display. I have saved it under the customize option many times but it still will not display. How do I fix this?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Taylor, Bluehost setup caching on your site so that changes you make will not go live immediately. You may wish to contact them and ask them to disable this feature, it doesn’t work too well with blogs unfortunately.

  18. Mike

Is it possible to use this feature but not right at the top.

I’d like to use it below a ‘large feature slider’

    On Equinox by the way.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Mike, unfortunately that is not possible currently, however we may be able to add that to a future update.

    2. Helen

Me too – I’m using Crystal. If there is a way to post further down under the large feature slider at some point that would be really useful.

      1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Helen, thanks for the feedback on this. It’s definitely something we want to add in future, so I’ll put your vote towards it.
