WordPress: Feature Header

This Customizer option can be used to display a magazine style section at the top of your homepage.

This feature includes two sections:

“Big this month” – this section will display popular posts
“Recent Posts” – this section displays a slider/carousel of recent posts.

You can select a post category to display within each section. This can be useful if you want to feature specific posts. For example, you could create a category called “featured posts” then assign this to either section. Then any posts you add to that category will show within this feature.

How to enable the Feature Header:

1. Go to the Appearance > Customize section of your dashboard

2. Select the “Feature Header” tab from the options in the list:

3. You can now select the options for your Feature Header:

Article tags: venture, ventura

I want to get rid of my feature header how do i do this?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Gemma, you can do that by unchecking the box named “Enable this feature”. It’s at the top of the panel.

  2. Yve

I want to have one picture instead of the caroussel (of blog posts). Is that possible?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Yve, that won’t be possible with this feature unfortunately. However you could try using the “Featured Image Panels” section of the Customizer. You could also try adding an image widget to one of the sections on the homepage. You can add widgets to the homepage only using this option.

  3. Anna

With the Blossom theme, how can you remove individual stories from the homepage carousel? It seems I can either display all categories or a single one.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Anna, you’re correct in that you can select a specific category to show. So this would mean you’ll need to create a new category, then add all your posts to this except for the ones you don’t wish to show. The other option would be to create a new category and only add posts to it when you want it to appear in the carousel.

  4. Anusha

    Hi Phil

On my settings/readings, I don’t have ‘your homepage displays’ – the first bit displayed is just ‘blog pages show at most, etc…Why is the homepage part missing for me?! I am on equinox.
I have sent you an e-mail about this!
    Thanks in advance

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Anushka, this means you don’t currently have any pages on your site. The option will only appear if you have pages such as “About” or “Contact” available to select from.

  5. rizwan

Hello, How to setup exactly like demo 4 theme content in my website ??

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Rizwan, it looks like you’ve almost got it! The last feature in the header is this. If you need any more help setting up just let me know 🙂

  6. Laura C

I am using this feature and I want to turn off the post titles being written across the posts. I have set the post title length to 0 but that hasn’t removed it.
    Can you help me please?

      1. Laura C

Great, took me 30 seconds (if that) and got the desired effect. Thanks Phil!

  7. Matt

    Hi Phil,

I think this feature is perfect for what I’d like to do on my site. I would like to add another 1-2 categories and change all my category names, for example:

    1) Restaurant reviews
    2) Bar reviews
    3) Hotel reviews
    4) Experience reviews

I’m essentially trying to clearly group sets of blog posts from the home page and allow people to explore categories this way. Is this possible?

  8. RachelSwirl

Hi I would like my three featured things to be :
    Contact Me
    About Me
and something else which Im not sure of yet

So these would be like buttons to pages…

    Is that possible?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Rachel, if I understand correctly this is possible in our Holly & Weave theme. You can upload 3 images and link them to any pages/sites you like.

  9. Katrina

    Hi Phil,

Is it at all possible to remove the large slider on my homepage and instead just keep the “Big This Month” and small “Recent Posts” slider at the top? I’ve gone through all the customising tabs but I can’t seem to remove it.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Katrina, this type of feature is possible by using the “Popular Posts Bar” option instead of the Feature Header. You can find this in its own tab in the Customizer, quite near the bottom of the list. It will display a row of popular posts across the top without a slider, like this example https://tundra.pipdig.co

      1. Katrina

        Hi Phil,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I currently have the Popular Posts Bar (like in the Tundra example) which I would like to keep. I also have a smaller “Recent Posts” section in the top right hand corner, but then also have a large slider for Recent Posts above the blog posts. It is the large slider that I can’t seem to get rid of… I had a look at where you mentioned but could only see options to enable the Popular Posts Bar, which as I said I currently have enabled and would like to keep. Sorry to bother you again!

        1. Phil (pipdig)

It sounds like that will be either the “Small Posts Slider” or the “Large Rectangle Slider”. They both have their own sections in the Customizer too. Let me know if that wasn’t it or if you have any other questions.

            1. Kara

This helped me, also! You’re a genius, Phil. Thank you so much 🙂

              1. Phil (pipdig)

I’m glad to hear the comments section is useful! 🙂

  10. Casey

Hi there! Can I select with 4 articles are shown in the Big This Month box? I’d like to feature my 4 all-time most popular posts, but when I select “All Time” I seem to just get 4 random posts. Thank you.

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Casey, this is possible by setting a category to that feature. For example, you could add your 4 chosen posts to a new category called “Featured”. Then assign that category to the “Big This Month” section and set the date as “All time”.

  11. Nicole

I’m using the feature header. is there a way of having just 1 section, so like a recent posts one without the big this month section. So it’s like 1 big slideshow across the homepage?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Nicole, if you use the “Large Rectangle Slider” option instead of the “Feature Header” it will work like you have described. This is in its own section within the Customizer.

  12. Stephanie

Is there anyway to make the feature header a featured video instead of blog posts

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Not directly, though you could publish a blog post which contains the video and then use this in the feature. Then when someone clicks on the post it will take them to view the video.

  13. Danielle

Hi, I am trying to change the size of the feature header. At the moment there is a big gap between the bottom of the feature header and the top of the first post and side bar. How can I fix this? Thank you

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Danielle, it looks like this feature is enabled, but without any categories set so it is creating a blank space. If you disable that feature it will remove the space.

      1. Danielle

Thank you Phil, I now have another problem.

I wanted to have two different instagram accounts on the side bar, which I managed to do. Then I wanted a third account on the top and bottom of the page. I just tried logging in to the third and it has logged me out of the 1st. Is there a solution for this? Thanks again

        1. Phil (pipdig)

Which option is it that you’re using to display the feeds? Is it the widget or Customizer options? If it is the former, you can add the Access Token from any Instagram account and it will display the posts from that account. The latter options can only display posts from the main Instagram account setup via this page.

  14. Tache

My feature images are showing up clear in the “Big This Month” section but the recent post images are blurry. How do I fix this? The images I used are high resolution.
