WordPress: How to define an excerpt for a post

When using an excerpt based post layout, your post content will be automatically shortened into a summary. Sometimes, you may with to manually set this excerpt rather than let WordPress automatically generate it for you.

How to set an excerpt for a post:

1. Go to the Posts section of your dashboard and select the post you would like to edit.

2. At the top right of the screen, click the Screen Options tab, as shown below:

3. In the options that appear across the top, make sure the “Excerpt” box is enabled, as shown below:

4. This will add an extra option to the bottom of the screen. If you scroll down, you should see a new “Excerpt” field. You can use this to add any text you like, and this will become the post’s excerpt.

Article tags: summary, excerpts, post summaries

Hi guys, I have a question about updating number of characters for post excerpts displayed on the homepage. I have the ‘Holly & Weave’ theme. I’m pretty sure I’ve updated this before but I can’t find it anymore, is there a way to actually restrict the number of characters displayed in the excerpt on the homepage?
