WordPress: How to change the width of your website and sidebar

You can make your blog posts more narrow or wider at any time. You can also change the width of the sidebar too. Using a combination of these options, you have complete control over the size/width of your content.

To change the width of your entire website, follow the steps below:

1) Go to Appearance > Customize in your dashboard:

2) Look for the “Layout Options” tab on the left:

3) In the options available, you can set the main width of your website by using the option shown below:

4) Once you’ve changed the main width of your website, you might like to increase/reduce the size of the main blog post column. The main blog post column is the space that contains your posts on the homepage (when the sidebar is active). Any remaining space is taken up by the sidebar:

The video below shows a quick example of both features in action:

Hi there, my sidebar gets pushed all the way to the bottom on the homepage and categories, but it shows up fine on pages and posts. Please advise 🙂

Hi Ivy, it looks like the sidebar is working correctly for me. Let me know if you still need any help with this 🙂

  2. Annemarie

I want to make my new photos wider than photos from my old posts (post width =1300px). I’ve changed the width of all my old photos to 1000 px (in the post editor). It looks totally fine when I click ‘view changes’ but when I click the post from the home page the photos are all in different widths again… I even tried to re upload all the photos. Can you please explain where it goes wrong?

Are you setting the images to “Full Size” when you’re adding them to the post?

      1. Annemarie

If the width already is 1000 pixels then yes, but when it’s bigger I’ve selected custom size and changed it to width 1000 as well.

It can be quite tricky to do this via the post editor. It might be best to resize the images to 1000px using something like Photoshop or http://www.picresize.com, then re-uploading to the post. That way you can set them all as “Full Size” and there will be less scope for issues caused by the post editing options.

If I want to change the width of photos not on a main page (home) but on the blog post page. Where should I do that?

    1. Phil (pipdig)

Hi Valeria, you can change the size of the photos within your posts by using the post editor.
